Tuesday 9 & Wednesday 10 July 2024

St Catherine's College, Oxford, UK and Online
#OGHB

The Oxford Global Health & Bioethics International Conference brings together the global health bioethics community, and provides a platform for sharing research, exchanging ideas and building collaborations.

The 2024 conference will take place across two days at St Catherine's College, University of Oxford, with selected sessions available online.

The conference is organised by the Oxford-Johns Hopkins Global Infectious Disease Ethics Collaborative (GLIDE), in association with the Global Health Bioethics NetworkEpidemic Ethics and the University of Oxford Pandemic Sciences Institute.

If you have any questions relating to the conference, please email us at: conference@ethox.ox.ac.uk

Financial Support

We have a limited fund available to provide support for delegates who are unable to obtain funding from their institution, to help with costs related to attending the conference. This is intended for delegates from low and middle-income countries (LMICs), and students.

The following types of support are available

  • Students and early career researchers* from LMICs: 3 nights of accommodation and conference fee waiver, plus a limited number of travel bursaries.
  • Students from high income countries outside of the UK: Conference fee waiver
  • UK Students: Discounted rate for conference fees

*In general, early career researchers are defined as up to 8 years from the date of PhD or equivalent terminal degree. However we’re happy to consider exceptions on a case-by case basis.

How to apply for financial support

When you submit your abstract you will be asked to indicate if you would like to apply for financial support and which of the above categories is applicable. Once the abstracts have been reviewed we will be in touch to request further details.

Early Career Researcher Conference Programme

The conference will also offer delegates a pre- and post-conference event programme, targeted at early-career-researchers (self-defined), open to anyone who is interested.

The pre-conference activities will take place on Monday July 8th, and will include:

  • A networking lunch
  • Three short discussions on academic training and development topics
  • A keynote talk

The post-conference activities will take place early evening on Wednesday 10 July, and will include:

  • Two ‘fireside chats’ with senior academics
  • Social pub trip or ice cream trip

There is no additional cost to attend this program. There may be additional support available for those attending the conference on bursaries (for example, an extra night’s accommodation).

Call for Abstracts

Abstracts submissions are now closed - the deadline was Monday 5 February 2024.

The 2024 conference will focus on critical ethical issues in global health policy, practice and research that are most in need of sustained and substantial attention from researchers, funders and policy makers.

The call for abstracts is purposefully broad to enable an inclusive agenda informed by the diverse contexts and priorities of people working in the global health field.

Topics addressed by the conference in previous years include ethics and infectious disease, climate change, conflict, decolonisation, emerging technologies, gender, migration, polarisation and vulnerability. Alongside ongoing interest in these areas, we are especially keen to highlight ethical issues and perspectives that are under-represented in current global health debates.

Conference abstracts are invited for:

1. Lightning Talks (Topical Discussions)

Lightning Talks will be 5 minutes long with the primary purpose to stimulate discussions on current and emerging issues. Lightning Talks will be grouped into themed sessions, taking place in person.

In each session, up to five presentations will be combined together in a panel with speakers delivering sequential ‘lightning talks’. The collection of brief talks will be followed by a moderated discussion on the overall topic.

Within the Lightning Talks category, abstracts are invited for ‘individual lightning talks’ which will be grouped into themes by the conference committee, or for ‘group lightning sessions’ that propose a specific topic, 4 or 5 identified “lightning” speakers, plus a moderator. Group lightning sessions will have 75 minutes available.

2. Oral Papers

Oral Paper presentations can be delivered either in person at the conference or online. Speakers will have 25 minutes available, to include a 15 minute presentation and 10 minutes for questions.

3. Poster Presentations

Posters will be displayed online and presenters will also be able to upload a video to accompany their poster. All posters will be entered into the Poster Competition, the winner of which will receive a £100 voucher prize.

4. Workshops

Workshops should address significant contemporary challenges in global health bioethics and have relevance across the bioethics community. They should be designed towards advancing a product or output, through engagement of conference attendees. Workshops will have 75 minutes available and should include representation from a range of institutions and/or countries.

How to submit an abstract

Abstracts for Lightning Talks (individual), Oral Papers & Poster Presentations

  • Please submit your abstract via our online conference portal before Monday 5 February 2024.
  • Your submission will need to include details for all authors and you will be asked to specify your preferred presentation format.

Abstracts for Group Lightning Sessions and Workshops

  • Please send an Expression of Interest (EOI) of no more than 500 words, before Monday 5 February 2024, by email to: conference@ethox.ox.ac.uk
  • All EOIs should specify: the session type you are submitting for, the names/affiliations of people involved in the session and their roles, and an overview of the proposed session.
  • Plus for Group Lightning Sessions: please be sure to specify the topic or question area your session will discuss, and how/why it is a current or emerging topic of importance.
  • Plus for Workshops: please be sure to specify the output your workshop is working towards, how engaging with conference delegates will advance your project, and the workshop format.

Please note: We are aiming to create a lively agenda with opportunities for discussion across and between sessions. Accepted abstracts/authors may, therefore, be invited to be part of the conference agenda in an alternative session than originally submitted for.
